Call for Papers

The Call for Papers is now open and closes at 23:59 GMT+1/BST on April 20th.

Before you propose a paper, please read the theme of the conference, the rules below, and then browse the list of thematic streams and all the panels.
The link to propose a paper is at the bottom of each panel page. All proposals must be made via panel pages; proposals sent via email will be disqualified.


Please note that an individual cannot present more than one paper at the ASA conference. One can of course make several proposals, but we would urge authors not to do that, as so much time gets lost in the subsequent chasing for withdrawals. Just below the 'Propose a paper' button for each panel there is a statement as to how many papers have been proposed to that panel to-date, something that may aid in deciding in which panel a paper may have a better chance of acceptance. Obviously that's not guaranteed, but it's worth taking a look at these statements.

Panels convenors and paper presenters need not be members of the association.  However, the ASA welcomes new members (see membership page).  Members of the association and of WCAA sister-associations can register for the conference at a discounted fee.

Proposing a paper

Paper proposals must consist of:
- a paper title
- the name/s and email address/es of the author and co-authors
- a short abstract of fewer than 300 characters
- a long abstract of fewer than 250 words

All proposals must be made via the online form, not by email. There is a 'propose a paper' link beneath the long abstract of each panel page. Go to the panel page you are interested in and then click on this proposal link to make your proposal directly to that panel.

On submission of the proposal, the proposing author (but not the co-authors) will receive an automated email confirming receipt. If you do not receive this email, please first check the login environment Cocoa (see 'Login' link on the toolbar above) to see if your proposal is there. If it is, it simply means your confirmation email got spammed/lost; if it is not, you will need to re-submit, as for some reason the process was not completed. Co-authors cannot be added/removed nor can papers be withdrawn by the proposers themselves – for that, please email conference(at)

Proposals will be marked as pending until the end of the Call for Papers (April 20th). Convenors will then be asked to make their decisions over the papers proposed to their panels by May 2nd and to communicate those to the proposers, marking them up within the login environment (Cocoa).

Transfer process

Papers which are neither accepted nor rejected but marked for 'transfer' will be given the opportunity to be re-housed into other panels. The conference organisers will contact the authors of proposals set to transfer on May 7th, sending them a list of possible target panels which still have space and might be willing to include additional papers.

The authors will then inform the conference organisers of two panels they would like to apply to (in order of preference). The title, short and long abstracts will be forwarded to the convenors with the request to consider the proposals. Transfers which get rejected by both panels will then be set to 'rejected'. We aim to resolve all transfers by May 21st.

Pre-circulation of papers

The ASA has no rule about this; many convenors are keen, however, to pre-circulate completed papers. To facilitate this, an author can upload a PDF of their paper within the login environment, which will then show as a downloadable file beneath their abstract on the public page on this site. It is a convenor's decision whether they instruct their presenters to make use of this.

Timing of presentations

Panels will last for no more than a single day, having a maximum of three 90-minute panel sessions, each of which may hold up to four papers. So at most a panel will have 12 papers. The panel timetable will be established just before registration opens on June 6th. Convenors are free to allocate the time in their sessions as they like. The ASA norm is to allocate each presenter a maximum of 20 minutes (for presentation and questions/discussion), but convenors should let you know about this nearer the time of the conference.

Communication between authors/convenors

Convenor/author email addresses are not shown on the panel pages for anti-spam reasons. However, there is an inbuilt secure email messaging system. If you cannot work that, please email conference(at) to obtain relevant email addresses.
