Art and Anti-Racism
Can art help in the fight against racism?

Come and discover what artists in Latin America have been doing to challenge racism in their countries. Participate in hands-on activities in which you can think about and share ideas about how art can work in anti-racist ways. Over a period of three years, researchers at the University of Manchester worked with Black, Indigenous and mestizo (mixed-race) artists in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia to explore and support what they are doing with their art to counter racial injustice. We will share with you an online exhibition and a documentary about these artists and their exciting work. The famous Manchester artist, SuAndi (OBE), cultural director of the National Black Arts Alliance, will join us to give us the benefit of her experience.
Peter Wade is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester. He has worked for many years on race and racism in Latin America, especially Colombia. His latest publication is Against Racism: Organizing for Social Change in Latin America (with Mónica Moreno Figueroa).
SuAndi: SuAndi OBE is Cultural Director of National Black Arts Alliance and an internationally recognised poet and performance artist. SuAndi received a Special Recognition Award at the 2023 Manchester Culture Awards for her contributions to art and culture, in particular to the Black Arts Sector and within the North West.
