Photography tour/workshop with Michael Wildman

A recent addition to the fringe events, this tour will take place on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1.40pm and will last almost two hours, arriving back at Surgeons' Hall at 3.30pm. The tour will start at Edinburgh Castle, and you will walk down the busy but very lively Royal Mile, taking in the sites and activities, with an emphasis on street photography. Michael can offer a little tuition on the technical use of cameras and the craft of street photography. He will refer to some of the acknowledged masters of street photography, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand and Saul Leiter.

Michael is an Edinburgh-born photographer with more than fifteen years of experience in his particular field of photography, which is primarily art-based and includes abstract photography, figurative, landscape, analogue and digital formats. He has taught history, technique and research methods of photography at the Edinburgh Drawing School for the past two years. In addition, Michael has supported his partner's anthropological fieldwork photographically in Bolivia within the National Psychiatric Hospital as well as in rural communities and urban settings. He has also utilised his teaching experience in offering film students different methodological approaches to the image. He has exhibited his work widely in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and other cities and has had his work chosen and exhibited by the National Galleries of Scotland.

2pm - 4/4.30pm: "Garden of earthly delights". An Enlightenment tour of the Royal Botanic Garden, with Greg Kenicer, Head of Education

The bones beneath the face: an interactive installation and osteological study

This interactive installation is co-curated by the “bones collective”, the Edinburgh College of Art and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh (John Harries, Joan Smith, Elena Kranioti, Linda Fibiger, John Nowak and Joost Fontein, from an original idea of Jane Cheeseman). It will take place from 9am to 4pm in the Alistair Duff Room, Symposium Hall, Surgeons' Hall.

8pm: Whisky tasting

If you are not attending the conference dinner, come along and spend the evening in the University's Appleton Tower Concourse tasting and learning about a selection of Sottish whiskies with Mark from Jolly Toper Tastings.

Evening: Stand-up comedy by anthropologists at Bright Club Edinburgh

Anthropology does comedy! In partnership with ASA2014, Bright Club Edinburgh is busy transforming a selection of anthropologists into stand-up comedy geniuses for your entertainment. We’d like to invite all delegates (and friends of delegates) to join us on 22 June for a unique evening of drinks and jokes - straight from the (research) field to funny. Did you know social science is an academic petri dish for comedic genius? Enlighten your mentalities and come to the greatest post-conference gathering in the known universe! David Hume will be there; Adam Smith will be there; Lord Monboddo will be there! You've been relying on reason for far too long; release your passions, and laugh yourself unconscious at our amazing night of comedy. The evening's paper, presented by Bright Club's brightest comedian-academics is entitled: "an anthropologist's thoughts on the evolution of German clowns in the age of quantum physics" with special guest appearances from Edinburgh's anthropology superstars... Be there or be, well, unenlightened!
The venue is Paradise Palms, a five-minutes' walk from where the closing ceremony of the conference will be held (Surgeons' Hall). The show starts at 8.30pm (and will finish at 10/10.30pm with one interval) but doors will open earlier so you can pop along directly after the end of the conference.
